After more than four decades at the heart of the UK glass industry, Dave Dalton formally retired on Friday 17 April 2026, bringing to a close to a career commitment to championing glass as a material of the future.

Throughout his career, Dave has been a leading advocate for glass, representing the 拢1.6bn sector to government, regulators and international bodies, and championing its role in manufacturing, sustainability and the future circular economy.

Dave began his career as an analytical chemist, developing his expertise in glass composition and technology before moving into research, development and senior management roles. He went on to lead national and international R&D programmes, later becoming Technical Director of Glass Technology Services and, subsequently, Chief Executive of British Glass.

During his tenure, Dave helped steer the industry through major challenges, including economic downturns, the COVID鈥19 pandemic and the recent energy crisis.

Reflecting on his career, Dave said:
鈥淕lass has been more than a career for me 鈥 it has been a lifelong passion. Despite the challenges the industry faces, I firmly believe glass remains central to a sustainable, circular future. I have been privileged to work with exceptional people across the sector and look forward to continuing to champion glass in whatever way I can.鈥

Following Dave鈥檚 retirement, Dr Nick Kirk has taken on the role of Federation Director of British Glass, providing continuity of leadership at a critical time for UK manufacturing.

Dr Nick Kirk, Federation Director, British Glass, said:
鈥淒ave鈥檚 contribution to the glass industry over the past 45 years has been extraordinary. He has led British Glass with integrity, deep technical insight and an unwavering commitment to ensuring our sector has a strong, credible voice at the highest levels of government.

鈥淎s I assume the role of Federation Director, I recognise the significant contribution Dave has made and am committed to continuing the work he has led. I wish him a long and well鈥慸eserved retirement and know that his commitment to glass will continue.鈥
