A panel at the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) Annual Conference focused on practical strategies for driving change in manufacturing.

鈥淚nnovation in Factories and Offices鈥 Enhancing our Workforce with Automation and Core Product Simplification鈥 was moderated by Ray Garries () and featured panelists Dr. Kamran Abedini () and Joe Altieri ().

鈥淚nnovation makes us better,鈥 said Garries in his opening remarks. 鈥淚t makes the industry better. Innovation means making things happen, making ideas real.鈥

AI in Innovation

Garries noted that a discussion about innovation cannot take place without talking about artificial intelligence. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to keep up with its progress, what鈥檚 available now,鈥 he said, warning that 鈥渋f you鈥檙e not using AI, you will fall behind.鈥

Dr. Abedini said that, in his view, AI is a tool, but not a replacement for humanity. 鈥淒on鈥檛 forget to use your human intelligence, too,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hink about form and function at the same time when designing, when innovating. Think about the end result. Engineering folks think about what they鈥檝e done before and how to improve it.鈥

He encouraged participants to approach problems like they are puzzles. 鈥淎 puzzle is a game that tests the ingenuity of the solver,鈥 he said. 鈥淪tart by asking the right questions.鈥

Scaling Up

Innovation in products doesn鈥檛 fail in design, said Abedini. 鈥淚t fails at scale, cost and consistency. Design products that are easy to make, assemble, install and maintain.鈥 When it comes to process over design, Abedini said, process always wins. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 need to be pretty, but it does need to be functional,鈥 he said.

Altieri spoke about the importance of timing when it comes to innovation. 鈥淭here is no comfort built into the question, 鈥榠f not now, then when?鈥 Cost, labor and leadership collided at the same time when I invented FlexScreen. We are good in this industry at optimizing what already exists. But that鈥檚 not the same as redesigning it.鈥

He noted that his company did not automate because they were excited about automation. 鈥淲e automated because the math stopped working,鈥 Altieri said. 鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 scale without it.鈥 Because his company seized the moment, a six million dollar investment paid off. 鈥淣ow we can create a finished screen every 15 seconds, with four operators,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut it cost $2 million per machine. We needed three. Nobody pretended it was going to be an easy decision. But we bet on that chance.鈥

The Role of Timing in Innovation

Sometimes timing matters more than the technology itself, Altieri concluded. 鈥淭hink about where you are on the adoption curve,鈥 he said. 鈥淓arly adopters move quickly when they see advantage. Laggards wait until they are out of options.鈥
