A New Generation of Non-Invasive Gas Measurement for Double-Glazed Units

Sparklike introduces , the next generation non-destructive gas measurement device for double-glazed insulating glass units.

The new Handheld NOVA™ builds on Sparklike’s established spark emission spectroscopy technology and introduces a new design, modernized software environment, and improved data handling capabilities to support today’s production and quality control requirements.

Addressing a Persistent Industry Challenge

Argon and krypton gas inside insulating glass units cannot be seen during production. Yet gas concentration directly impacts thermal performance, compliance, and long-term product quality.

Maintaining stable gas filling across different shifts, operators, and production conditions remains a challenge for many manufacturers. Gas filling deviations may only become apparent after products reach the market, leading to warranty cases, inefficiencies, and reputational risks.

Sparklike Handheld NOVAâ„¢ enables manufacturers to verify gas fill levels non-destructively, meaning tested units remain fully usable and can be delivered to customers after measurement.

Modernized Software for Daily Production Use

While the measurement principle remains based on plasma emission spectroscopy that is compliant with ASTM E2649-20, the NOVA introduces several key updates:

  • Measurement result in approximately 2 seconds 
  • Single and multisample measurement modes 
  • User-configurable PASS/FAIL limits 
  • QR code reader support for optional unit-level traceability 
  • Wireless data transfer 

The device supports argon measurement as standard, with krypton measurement available as an option.

The key development objective was not to change the proven measurement technology but to introduce a future-ready software platform that allows better data usability and scalability.

Improved Traceability and Data Accessibility

Manufacturers increasingly require documentation and traceability to meet internal quality standards and regional compliance requirements.

With Handheld NOVAâ„¢, measurements can be linked to specific insulating glass units using QR code identification, supporting audits and documentation processes. Wireless communication and browser-based access to data allow measurement results to be integrated into quality monitoring systems.

Designed for Double-Glazed Units

Sparklike Handheld NOVAâ„¢ is designed specifically for double-glazed insulating glass units. The device measures gas concentration non-destructively through the glass using spark emission spectroscopy.

It can measure double-glazed units with one low-e coating, provided measurement is performed through the clear glass pane. Certain thin laminated structures can also be measured under defined conditions.

For more complex structures such as triple glazing or multiple coatings, Sparklike offers its laser-based measurement solutions Sparklike Laser Portableâ„¢ and Sparklike Laser Integratedâ„¢.

Built for Production Environments

The NOVA features an updated industrial design and ergonomic structure for daily factory use. The device is portable, battery-operated, and weighs approximately 1.7 kg.

Measurement is non-destructive, eliminating the need to damage sealed units, which distinguishes it from invasive gas testing methods.
