Opta Group is a leading North American supplier of performance materials and solutions in the molten metal, infrastructure, and specialty chemical industries, including a newly designed supplementary cementitious material made from the waste glass generated at waste and recycling facilities, also known as “MRF Glass“. Our TORXX Kinetic Pulverizer® technology plays an integral part in OPTA’s confidential processing apparatus, and we are excited to be part of OPTA’s success.     

This newly manufactured Premium Ground Glass Pozzolan material will help to dramatically reduce the amount of Portland-cement needed to prepare high-quality concrete and provide a new option to replace traditional supplementary cementitious materials such as fly-ash, blast-furnace slag and silica fume. Traditional cementitious materials are in diminished supply or the production/use poses increasing environmental concern.

The production of Portland-cement used in concrete is responsible for approximately 7% of total global CO2 emissions, so replacing a portion of the Portland-cement with post-consumer ground glass can significantly reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. As a bonus, ground-glass pozzolans make use of a readily available regional waste material that is often landfilled instead of recycled, and it can be used in place of fly ash (which can contain toxic heavy metals), ground granulated blast furnace slag, and silica fume, all of which are byproducts of carbon-intensive industries.

Processed into a fine powder, ground glass pozzolans can replace up to 40% of Portland-cement in a mix, creating a stronger, denser, less permeable, and more durable concrete while making use of a readily available, inert waste material. Pozzolans such as ground glass can also improve concrete’s workability and freeze/thaw resistance.
